There’s concern in the hospitality industry that young people lack the necessary employability skills, as recruiters are increasingly hard pressed to find graduates with the skills fundamental to customer service.
They’re not alone. CBI research says that 42% of companies are forced to provide remedial training because school leavers are unable to function in the workplace.
But while the problem of employability is affecting all sectors, it’s particularly keen in areas such as hospitality, where interaction with customers is the raison d’etre.
And when the travel and tourism industry’s contribution last year was 6.7% of total GDP, and it employs nearly as many jobs as the financial service sector, this is a voice that needs to be listened to.
