Innovation – it’s a good thing, right? Of course! Every organisation wants it. It’s essential for survival, let alone growth. Leaders live or die by it. It’s what brings success…
Ok, so why are most organisations rubbish at it?
Could it due to the ‘dark side’ of innovation and creativity. The side that’s rarely mentioned. Because it’s all about failure, uncertainty, change, risk.
When you do genuinely new things you’re likely to make mistakes, look foolish, get ostracised, be laughed at, ignored, and ridiculed.
And there’s no guarantee you’ll go through all that and come out the other side basking in the spotlight of glory. That’s what risk means.
Not so appealing.
People know this.
Organisations know this.
Leaders know this.
Is it any surprise that most choose to keep their heads down, to stay with the status quo?
Those that talk about the tricky bits get over them. And get on with the innovation.
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you,
then you win.
