The previous post highlighted concern that leaders in the IT industry have about the lack of soft skills within their ranks…well, that’s not the only ‘left-brain’ sector that’s got this problem. 1400 CFOs were asked by Accountemps about which skills areas the financial professionals on their staff needed to improve – top of the list with 31% was communication, followed at 26% by leadership. These soft skills are now understood to be tacit requirements for advancement.
And then the same problem is emerging for engineers. Dr Jamie Cleaver, of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, believes that, while technically capable, many engineers are at risk of not being able to communicate their technical understanding:
This is extremely limiting from a personal and business perspective.
Getting the balance is the key.
